Sarah Heath - Friday 9.15 and Friday 11.45

Clinical Programme

Friday - 9.15-10.15 - Animals behaving badly - what the general practitioner can do and when to call in help Behaviour problems are commonly presented to general practitioners who often feel ill equipped to deal with them. This presentation will discuss some of the most commonly encountered canine and feline behaviour problems and give advice to practice as to how to investigate them within the general practice context. It will discuss the role of no harm approaches for the initial management of the problems and give advice about the role of pheromone therapy, drug therapy and neutering in behavioural cases. Advice will also be given about referring patients for more specific behavioural investigation.

Friday - 11.45-12.45 - Managing noise phobias in an increasingly noisy world Noise related fears are extremely common in the pet population and cause a great deal of distress for both animals and their owners. This presentation will consider how these problems develop and give practical advice as to how veterinary practices can help their patients to cope with inevitable exposure to the sounds they fear. It will also consider the important issue of treating noise related fears, through the use of desensitisation and counter conditioning techniques, in order to effect a long term solution to these problems.
